Ben Stokes, England’s terrific all-rounder, is all set to notch the spot of the Test skipper for the first time in his cricketing career. As Joe Root will be missing out, Stokes has been given the opportunity to lead the side.
Root’s authentic reason to miss out the first test ahead of the West Indies is the birth of his second child. Along with the first test, he will also miss out the three-day warm-up match.
The Cricket matches were facing severe delay in the schedules and there were no physical activities. West Indies and England will mark a beginning to international cricket after a long time on 8th July at Ageas Bowl. The sides will be featuring in the three test matches.
Ben Stokes to captain the Test side against West Indies, Joe Root misses out
However, Ben Stokes does not appreciate being a captain and opens that he is not one of those who associate being the next skipper. He, however, is eager for the new role in Joe Root’s absence. He speaks that being a captain is not his real goal, winning is.
“I’m not one of those people that people would necessarily associate as being the next England captain,” said Stokes as quoted by Hindustan Times.
“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity. But being a captain has never been a real goal, it’s just about winning. It’s a huge honour to think about. At the same time, I know I’m only stepping in to take over for one game because of Joe’s personal situation,” he added
