Papua New Guinea defeats Kenya to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2020:

After being reduced to 19/6 in the first 4 overs of the match, Papua New Guinea pulled off a 45 runs victory over Kenya to secure a slot at the T20 World Cup 2020. Kenya won the toss and decided to field first. Papua New Guinea sent Tony Ura and captain Assad Vala to bat first. Kenya pulled off the best possible start by claiming 6 wickets of Papua New Guinea on just 19 runs in the first 4 overs of the match. Tony Ura added 3, Captain Assad Vala scored 2, Lega Siaka added 5, Charles Amini made none, Riley Hekure contributed 1, and wicketkeeper Kiplin Doriga scored 5 runs.

Sese Bau and Norman Vanua were the saviors of Papua New Guinea. The pair shared a partnership of 77 runs to bring their team back from the dead. Sese Bau scored 17 runs after facing 33 balls for 1 four, rotating the strike with Norman Vanua who dealt the real damage to Kenya. Vanua scored 54 runs off 48 balls for 3 fours and 2 sixes. The pair batted very sensibly to ensure that their team lasts for full 20 overs.

Kenya’s Collins Obuya dismissed Sese Bau and Norman Vanua both in the same over. Papua New Guinea’s Jason Kila added 12 runs off 7 balls and Nosaina Pokana contributed 7 runs towards the end.

Kenya required 119 runs off 120 balls to win the match. They sent their wicketkeeper-batsman Irfan Karim and Dhiren Gondaria to open their innings. Dhiren Gondaria lost his wicket in the first over after scoring just 1 run. Wicketkeeper-batsman Irfan Karim scored 29 runs off 22 balls with 4 fours, while Collins Obuya lost his wicket after contributed 10 runs off 19 balls.

Kenya was 4 down on 45 runs and it started going downhill from there as they kept losing 1 wicket after the other. Irfan Karim, Collins Obuya, and Aman Gandhi were the 3 players that made it into double digits for Kenya. They lost all their wickets by 74 runs in 18.4 overs.

Papua New Guinea’s captain Assad Vala bowled exceptionally well, as he claimed 3 wickets after conceding just 7 runs in his 4 overs. Nosaina Pokana took care of the Kenyan tail-enders as he took 3 wickets for 21 runs in his 3.4 overs. Norman Vanua and Damien Ravu got 2 wickets each for their team.

Papua New Guinea’s Norman Vanua was named the “Player of the Match” for his out-of-the-world performance with the bat under severe pressure and also taking 2 wickets for 19 runs in his 3 overs.
