Match Preview

The 2020-21 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) is set to commence on Thursday. The defending champions Sydney Sixers will take on the Hobart Hurricanes in the opening game of the season. Daniel Hughes will lead the Sixers as Moises Henriques has been picked to represent Australia A for a three-day practice game against India in Sydney.

On the other hand, the Hurricanes will miss their regular skipper Matthew Wade who is part of Australia’s Test team which will be busy playing against India in a four-match series from December 17. Peter Handscomb, the new recruit for this season, has been handed over the leadership duties in Wade’s absence. The two teams locked horns in a practice game on Tuesday which the Sixers won by only two wickets.

Weather Report & Pitch Condition

Rain might hamper the start of the BBL season a bit as it is expected to be cloudy for the whole day in Hobart on Thursday. The temperature will also hover around 12-15 Degrees Celsius during the match.

It is the start of the summer in Australia and it goes without saying that the pitches will be flat. The Bellerive Oval is known to be a batting paradise and it was no different in the last BBL season either. The teams batting first enjoyed more success but with this being the first match, the side winning the toss is expected to bowl first.

HUR vs SIX Top Picks

  • James Vince is a top-class T20 batsman. He has played a whopping 225 matches in the format scoring 5833 runs at a strike-rate of more than 130. He will most probably open or bat at three for the Sixers.
  • Josh Philippe recently played in the IPL for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and fared decently opening the innings. He was the top run-getter for the Sixers last season scoring 487 runs in 16 innings. Expect him to come good again.
  • D’Arcy Short is a beast when it comes to the BBL. He opens the innings and also bowls a few overs. Last season, he scored 357 runs in just nine matches and also picked six wickets in seven innings.
  • Colin Ingram is a T20 veteran having played 265 T20 matches. He has amassed 6658 runs at a strike-rate of 140.7 so far and will be crucial for the Hurricanes this time.
