Rohit Sharma has become the winner of the thirteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) grabbing the fifth title for his team. The most successful IPL captain has been hailed as the best skipper for the limited-overs after winning five out of eight titles in his tenure.

As no other captain has achieved the milestone, and India national team often loses at the final stages of any cricketing event, the former Indian cricketer, Gautam  Gambhir believes that the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) shall choose Rohit as their captain.

“If Rohit Sharma doesn’t become India’s captain, it’s their loss, not Rohit’s. Yes, a captain is only as good as his team and I completely agree with that, but what are the parameters to judge a captain on who is good and who isn’t? The parameters and benchmark should be the same. Rohit has led his team (MI) to five IPL titles.” Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo.

He also mentioned the unhidden fact that Kohli is yet to win the IPL title despite leading the team for years along with being in playoffs and finals many times. Gautam said that he is not taking out flaws in Kohli’s captaincy but Rohit is a leader as examining upon IPL’s parameter.

“They can also consider split-captaincy. No one is poor. Rohit has shown in white-ball cricket how big the difference is between his and Virat’s captaincy. One player had led his team to five titles, the other hasn’t won yet,” Gambhir said.

“I’m not saying this because Kohli is a poor captain. But he has received the same platform that Rohit has, so you have to judge both of them on the same parameters. Both have been captains in the IPL for the same length of time. I feel Rohit stands out as a leader.” he concluded.
